About

The National Centre for Research in Logic (NCNL/CNRL) was founded on May 21st 1955. The centre aims at the development and the coordination of the research in both philosophical and mathematical logic at the different Belgian universities.

The centre publishes the journal Logique et Analyse and Cahiers du Centre de Logique and organises lectures, seminars and colloquiums. It also supports the Belgian Society for Logic and Philosophy of Science.

Several research projects of the NCNL/CNRL were the subjects of contracts with the National Fund for Scientific Research:

• 1986-1989 — Under the supervision of Jean Ladrière
  Study of the different forms of demonstrative and argumentative reasoning from the perspective of mathematical logic, philosophical logic and argumentation theory.
• 1990-1993 — Under the supervision of Diderik Batens
  Study of formal discourse, approached from logic and philosophy of science and in relation to the different ways in which natural language functions, including juridical language.
• 1994-1997 — Under the supervision of Diderik Batens
  Study of the different forms of demonstrative and argumentative reasoning methods, approached from the perspectives of mathematical logic, philosophical logic, applied logic, and argumentation theory.
• 1998-2001 — Under the supervision of Diderik Batens
  Study of standard and non-standard logics in relation to their context of application: mathematics, philosophy of science, artificial intelligence, philosophy of language and argumentation.
• 2002-2005 — Under the supervision of Jean Paul Van Bendegem
  The relevance of non-classical logics for philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics and philosophy of language.
• 2006-2009 — Under the supervision of Jean Paul Van Bendegem
  The relevance of formalisation and the need for alternative logics for the study of philosophical problems stemming from the recent developments in philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science and cognitive science.
